Standard 1: Student Development and Diversity

This is a reflection of a few questions asking about multicultural music that I wrote for my Inclusive Participatory Music Practices class. This reflection asks and shows different resources, factors, and goals for students to take away from teaching a multicultural music lesson. I had this under the disposition section of Standard 1: Student Development and Diversity because it reflect on my thoughts as a music educator in regards to the development of multicultural music in a class setting.

Standard 2: Learning Processes

This document is a reflection I wrote after teaching a lesson to my peers in a school setting. This lesson was a “mock” lesson that we did before taking the same lesson to a beginning middle school band and teaching it to a band at Tri-North Middle School. This is a reflection that talks about how I did doing my lesson to the class. I put it under Standard 2: Learning Processes with the disposition portion, because it reflects on how I taught and facilitated student learning in a teaching setting. I reflected on what went well, and what I can improve on the next time I teach that lesson in order to better help my student’s learning processes.

Standard 3: Instructional Planning and Delivery

This document is a reflection of the previous lesson I had just taught, mentioned in Standard 3 of the Knowledge and Skill sections. I had written out my lesson plan, executed the lesson, and now I am reflecting on how the entire process went. It will document what I think went well during the lesson, and what I can improve on in the future. This is under disposition with Standard 3: Instructional Planning and Delivery because it reflects on how I just planned and delivered a specific lesson. It shows how I acknowledged what went well, but also what I can improve on to become a better teacher.

Standard 4: Assessment

The following document is a question and answer blog that was done for my Educational Psychology class. The prompt asks me to develop a formative assessment, create a learning objective, and reflect on how assessment has positively influenced my learning. I have this under the disposition section of Standard 4: Assessment because it reflects on not only how I will teach assessment, but it asks me a time that I was positively influenced my assessment and I can use that to further help my students. I reflect on how I can become a better teacher in giving assessment to my students so it is beneficial to them, and not just something that will go in the grade book.

Standard 5: Learning Environment

This document is a reflection on an observation I took at North Central High School in Indiana. My task was to observe the teacher, and reflect on the various strategies he used as a teacher and how they were effective. One of the key components that tied everything together was his use of classroom management and how that effected the student’s learning environment. He was able to use the tone of his voice to manage discipline, but still stay positive and productive at the same time. I have this document under the disposition portion of Standard 5: Learning Environment because it demonstrates how I observed and reflected about a high school teacher and how he was able to successfully give his students a positive learning environment. I can use this to further my professional development because I can try out different strategies with my students that this director used and see if they will be effective or not. It will give me more tools to use whenever I need to use them.

Standard 6: Professional Learning and Ethical Practice

This document is a reflection I wrote after taking a secondary clarinet lesson. For my Woodwind Techniques class, when I was learning clarinet I received a lesson from a collegiate clarinet player. During the lesson, we worked on my tone, technique, various resources to give to students, and any other questions I might have on how to play the instrument. I made sure to write down notes, so I could remember what I was taught. This reflection reiterates what I did during the lesson and certain aspects that might be challenging to students. It is placed in the disposition portion of Standard 6: Professional Learning and Ethical Practice because it reflects on how I am trying to become a better rounded musician. A good director knows detail about every instrument in the ensemble, and being a brass player I needed to further my professional development by learning the other instruments. I was able to document this and write a reflection to continue to elevate my practice.

Standard 7: Content Knowledge

The following document is a reflection written after giving a lesson to my string techniques class. We were all given a piece to rehearse, and being a brass player teaching strings in a rehearsal setting it was a little challenging. I rehearsed the piece of music just like any other piece of music, but I just had to fix the strings related issues. This is a reflection of that lesson, talking about what went well with my lesson, and what I could have done better. I put this under the disposition section of Standard #7: Content Knowledge because it reflects how I did in a lesson, but also shows my understanding of basic string playing. It reflects on the central concepts of string techniques, as well as discipline in that setting.
