Standard 1: Student Development and Diversity

I my Wind Band Literature class, we are required to give presentations on certain pieces of literature every week. For one presentation, I did an analysis on “African Folk Trilogy” by Anne McGinty. This piece of literature is a great example of how composers integrate cultural identities into their band compositions. I was able to not only analyze the music from a theory standpoint, but from a cultural standpoint as well. I included this in the skill section of Standard 1: Student Development and Diversity because it shows how I was able to analyze the cultural aspects of this particular piece. I used my knowledge on culturally diverse music, and created a score analysis of a piece that has many different African traditions in it. It shows that I will be able to use my knowledge of the score to teach it to my students.

Standard 2: Learning Processes

This is a video of a private lesson I gave, teaching another student how to play the french horn. It will show how I will teach a beginner how to play french horn, and the various challenges we both run into. The lesson will show how I need to adapt to this particular student in order to help him play more notes, and play with a nicer tone. I have placed this under the skill section of Standard 2: Learning Processes because it shows the learning process of not only the student, but of myself as the teacher. I was able to facilitate that student’s achievement, while showing him the learning process he will have to go through in order to continue to get better at that instrument.

Standard 3: Instructional Planning and Delivery

This is a video of the actual lesson referenced in Standard 3 of the Knowledge section. This video will show me teaching a group of college-age students playing on secondary instruments as an ensemble. I was able to use my plan to execute a successful lesson. I have this video in the skill section of Standard 3: Instructional Planning and Delivery because it shows the delivery portion of this standard. I previously planned to the lesson, and then I delivered the lesson, following my plan as needed.

Standard 4: Assessment

In my Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance Project, I wrote an assessment portion in order to help assess student understanding of “A Movement for Rosa.” Earlier in the project I documented analysis of “A Movement for Rosa,” and now I am writing various ways to assess student understanding of the learning tasks given. Not only will it assess student learning, but it will give a concrete grading system to use so the student’s can track their progress on how they are doing and why they have the grade they have. This is placed with the skill portion of Standard 4: Assessment because it documents how I plan to assess student learning for a particular piece of music. This will monitor student progress in meaningful way, and use data to guide the instructional decision making.

Standard 5: Learning Environment

The following video is a lesson that I taught to my peers. This lesson consists of me teaching a lesson on “The Tempest” to classmates who are playing on secondary instruments. Throughout the video, I will be managing the classroom environment, making sure I keep a positive, well-managed, and safe environment for my peers. This is under the skill portion of Standard 5: Learning Environment because it demonstrates my ability to teach and adapt to a specific learning environment. It will demonstrate how I can keep a positive an productive classroom, while still managing my time and efficiency.

Standard 6: Professional Learning and Ethical Practice

The following video shows a conducting rotation I performed for one of my conducting classes. The video will show me conducting to a small ensemble, and I will be given comments on how to better myself as a conductor. I am actively trying to learn during this video, in order to become a better conductor. These videos were recorded in order for me to go back and watch myself conduct, so I can assess what I am doing well and what I need to work on. This video is under the skill portion of Standard 6: Professional Learning and Ethical Practice because it demonstrates the steps I am taking in order to use evidence to evaluate myself as a conductor and as a professional. Conducting is an important part of rehearsals and I need to continually get better in order to rehearse in a more efficient way.

Standard 7: Content Knowledge

These are the notes I took during my Woodwind Techniques class. These are the formal notes I used to turn in with my binder at the end of the semester, and they serve as a guide for me to teach woodwinds in the future. These document includes notes on each woodwind instrument, and within these sections it talks about fingerings, tone, equipment, embouchure, articulation, posture, care and maintenance, and much more. In addition, there are parts where it talks about trouble shooting certain instruments, and specific problems that might come up. This is under the skill section of Standard 7: Content Knowledge because it gives lots of information and is a guide to teaching woodwinds to beginners.
