Standard 1: Student Development and Diversity

Here, I created a program overview for a semester long class at a middle school. The goal of this task was to create a curriculum that could be incorporated into a music class at the middle school level. In creating this program, I was able to incorporate cultural diverse aspects of music into the curriculum, as well as goals, learning objectives, and various resources to help guide the class. I placed this in the knowledge section of Standard 1: Student Development and Diversity because it shows the knowledge students will need in order to not only make music, but make music with a culturally diverse topic. It shows that I personally need to have a high knowledge of cultural music, and how I can develop that throughout a semester-long course. This also includes a map of the development of the student’s knowledge in regards to culturally diverse music.

Standard 2: Learning Processes

This score analysis is a part of my Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance (CMP) project that I wrote for my Methods and Materials for Teaching Instrumental Music class. I did an analysis on “A Movement for Rosa” by Mark Camphouse, which includes a basic overview of the piece containing background information, analysis, skill outcomes, knowledge outcomes, affective outcomes, key centers, meter, instrumentation, melodic lines, texture, timbre, scoring, and form. The project presents information that might pose as a challenge for students, as well as any other factors to consider before preparing for this piece. This is under Standard 2: Learning Processes, with the knowledge section, because the document gives an understanding of the learning process as well as demonstrate factors that will inhibit or prohibit students to perform this piece. Additionally, it will also show various learning tasks student’s will be able to accomplish after being taught this piece.

Standard 3: Instructional Planning and Delivery

Here is a lesson plan that was written for my Elementary Methods class. It demonstrates my preparation and planning in order to teach a lesson later in the semester. This plan includes an outline of the standards being addressed, the objectives being taught in the lesson, the materials needed to teach the lesson, the procedures of the lesson itself, and how I will assess the student’s learning. I had to plan and write out how to best teach "Fire on the Mountain" to set myself up to execute a successful lesson based on standards, engaging material, and achievement of learning goals. This is under the knowledge section of Standard 3: Instructional Planning and Delivery because it represents the beginning stages of how I will teach a lesson to a class. It represents the planning stages of teaching students a piece of music, and the knowledge needed to outline how I will rehearse a certain piece.

Standard 4: Assessment

This is a rubric that was created for my Professional Development Project in my Instrumental Methods class. Over the coarse of half a semester, I will document and track how I will develop as a sight-reader, in order to gain the skills necessary to teach my students how to sight-read better. This is a rubric that I created for myself in order to assess my findings at the end of the semester. I have put this in Standard 4: Assessment under the knowledge section because it demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of assessment principles. Additionally, if I can demonstrate the ability to assess myself, then I will use those techniques to assess my students. It will show that I can monitor their progress in a meaningful way with concrete data.

Standard 5: Learning Environment

The following is a portfolio write-up I wrote for my Educational Psychology course. This question and answer prompt talks about sociocultural theory, and how that is used in the classroom. Questions include giving definitions, short answers, and examples of how sociocultural thinking has influenced me personally in some way. I have this under the knowledge section of Standard 5: Learning Environment because it is nothing but knowledge on theories about student’s learning environment. This prompt not only answers technical terms to consider in your classroom learning environment, but gives examples as to how theory has influenced me in my own life.

Standard 6: Professional Learning and Ethical Practice

This document is an outline of my Professional Development Project written for my Instrumental Methods class. The goal of the assignment was to pick out a specific topic, and create, outline, and reflect on how you develop as a teacher with that specific topic. My topic includes how I will become a better sight-reader as a player and a conductor, document the successful skills I find, and use them to teach to my students. My outline includes a goal, a sequential plan of action, resources needed, and a way to assess myself in the process. I have put this under the knowledge section of Standard 6: Professional Learning and Ethical Practice because it shows how I am planning and executing ways to continually develop my skills as a music educator. This outline also presents information on how I will document my findings, so I can keep records of how I am doing and how I can use those findings in a professional setting.

Standard 7: Content Knowledge

The following document is a handout I created for my Brass Techniques class. Being a trumpet player, I created a handout to give to everyone that talked about the trumpet. This handout goes over various aspects of the trumpet such as history, different models and their prices, mouthpieces, method books, etudes, repertoire, ranges, mutes, and how to take care of a trumpet. This type of handout can be used to help further your trumpet players, and give you advice when you are not a trumpet player yourself. I have this under the knowledge section on Standard 7: Content Knowledge because it shows my understanding for the trumpet, and how that can be used in a classroom setting. This information will create learning experiences for student trumpet players, and give them some tools to succeed. In addition, it shows my mastery of the content so I can give that information to others.
